Helmets off to Katie Compton as he she secures her eighth US National Cyclo-Cross Title

In another superalative ride Katie Compton secured her eighth consecutive national title on Sunday in Wisconsin’s Badger Prairie Park. Compton took control of the race shortly after the start and finished race a second short of two minutes ahead of second placed 20-year-old Kaitlin Antonneau, who is coached and mentored by Compton.

“It was really tricky, because the course was changing and getting harder each lap,” reflected Compton. “When I pre-rode it was a little more firm. When we started it was thawing a little bit and by the last lap it was alot muddier, and it was slippery mud on top of hard ground.

“I’m pretty happy it’s not cold and snowy here, but I’m sure next year they’ll make up for it with a blizzard or something where we’ll need skis for the run-up.”

“It was my first national cross title and it means a lot to me. I felt strong in the race and got everything right on the day.

“Racing in Europe has helped a lot. the last couple of seasons have worked wonders for my riding. I usually feel burned out by the time I get to the Nationals but I had a plan for today and I stuck to it. I went to America earlier in the season to get some racing in and get some UCI points and the plan paid off today.”

The cycling legend that was Tommy Godwin - 75,065 miles in a year

On New Year’s Eve 1939, Tommy Godwin completed a remarkable year of cycling. The 27 year old had shattered the previous world record for distance cycled in a year - a  record that is unlikely to be ever challenged. Interest in the record has been heightened this year through the twitter account @yearrecord which provides a log of the incredible mileage covered by Godwin each day.

Godwin had been a delivery boy for a green grocer’s shop. With the job came a bike and his interest in, and aptitude for cycling developed quickly. He rode his first race at the age of 14, a  25 mile time trail which he won.

Cycling career developed  first as an amateur with the Potteries Cycling club in his native Staffordshire and then professionally with Rickmansworth CC. He won over 200 road races and time trials before commencing the challenge of taking back the year record from Australian Ossie Nicholson at 5.00 a.m.on January 1 1939.

Godwin was initially sponsored by Ley cycles but the punishing schedule took its toll on his bike and equipment and this proved too much of a demand on such a small company. At the end of May the sponsorship mantle passed to Raleigh and they provided their latest lightweight model to Godwin, the Raleigh Record Ace with a Sturmey Archer 4 speed hub.

On Ocotober 26th 1939, Tommy rode into Trafalgar Square, having completed 62,658 miles, gaining the record with two months to spare. He then took his only day off from cycling in the whole year in order to meet the Prince of Wales.

To add to his amazing feat of endurance, Godwin continued cycling in order to reach the 100,000 mile mark which he did so on 14 May 1941.
